The fabric acts as a dust, dirt, and moisture barrier, protecting the electronic components underneath, while allowing sound and some air to pass. We often laminate these fabrics with a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) that is cut to a zone so that the central portion of the filter is free to breathe.
